Driving safety in winter -precautions for winter maintenance of power batteries for pure electric buses

Jan 05 , 2024

Recently, many places have been affected by cold air and have experienced continuous cooling. In cold weather conditions, vehicle performance is generally affected. To better ensure the safe operation of pure electric buses, please pay attention to the following matters and do a good job of winter maintenance for your buses.

The reduction in charging and discharging capacity of the vehicle's power battery at low temperatures, as well as the operation of the vehicle's ice and snow mode, will reduce the braking energy feedback, increase the vehicle's power consumption, and reduce the vehicle's endurance mileage.

In low temperature environments, high-current charging can cause damage to the power battery and shorten its lifespan. To avoid damaging the battery, the power battery's charging capacity will automatically decrease at low temperatures, and the charging time will be extended (0.5-1 hour).

About Battery

When the battery SOC is below 30%, please charge the vehicle in time. The suitable charging ambient temperature range for the vehicle is 0℃-45℃. Try to avoid charging below 0℃ to avoid affecting the vehicle's range.

In winter, it is necessary to conduct thermal insulation treatment on the power battery to reduce heat dissipation. Please close the battery cooling grille and take proper insulation measures.

In low temperature environments, power batteries usually have a self-heating process, which can extend the vehicle charging time. It is recommended to charge the vehicle after operation, when the battery temperature is relatively high, which can save charging time and improve charging efficiency.

Due to the frequent occurrence of rain, snow, frost and fog in winter, please carefully check and confirm that the charging gun and socket are free of ice and condensation before charging, and ensure that they are dry and free of abnormalities before charging.

About Driving :

Check the antifreeze: Ensure that the antifreeze is suitable for the local temperature, has the proper concentration, flows freely, and does not freeze.

Check the defroster: ensure that the defroster is working properly to avoid snow and ice accumulation on the windows, which can affect the driver's vision.

Check tire condition: Make sure the tire pressure is within the normal range. Low tire pressure can increase power consumption. Inspect the tire wear. Winter roads can be slippery, so it's important to ensure that the tires can provide sufficient traction to avoid slipping.

Check the lighting system: Winter often brings rainy and snowy days with low visibility. Please ensure that the vehicle's lights are functioning properly to guarantee safe driving.

Control speed and maintain distance: Winter temperatures are low, and roads are prone to being covered in snow. Try to drive in existing tire tracks. When encountering slippery roads, maintain a stable speed and keep a safe distance from the vehicles ahead and behind, especially in low-visibility weather such as rain, snow, or heavy fog. Drive slowly and steadily, avoiding rapid acceleration or emergency braking.

Use low gear when going uphill or downhill: When going uphill, avoid stepping on the gas pedal too hard or shifting gears, as this can easily cause the vehicle to slide backward or stall. When going downhill, never coast in neutral.

About storage

If the vehicle is stored for more than 1 day in low temperature weather, be sure to charge the power battery to more than 50%. If the storage time exceeds 3 days, try to keep the power battery charged at 50%-80% and ensure that it is fully charged and discharged once a month. After full charging, do not store it directly. It needs to be discharged to SOC 50%-80% before storage.

If possible, it is recommended to park the vehicle in a warm warehouse to avoid the impact of low temperatures on the battery and the difficulty of starting the vehicle. In addition, vehicles that have been parked for a long time need to undergo a "power battery equalization maintenance" every three months and before first operation to extend the battery life.

The low temperature environment in winter places need special requirements on the safe operation of pure electric buses. King Long reminds you that only by doing a good job of maintenance can better ensure the safe operation of your vehicle, extend its service life.
